Narrowing my Thoughts

In my last post I discussed researching the Fleur de lis. It is an interesting subject, but I just was not feeling it.
Today I went to the Cannell Library and was able to get some much needed help there. I give great Thanks to Suzie and Susan L. for their encouragement to stay focused. They really helped me get through my struggle. Joan Carey was wonderful in helping me refine my searches in the databases. I strongly encourage anyone who can to go to the library. It is an amazing resource!
I decided to go with, "Women and their reentry to education."

What I Already Know.
Here are some reasons why....
Security
Same job for more pay
Self improvement
Self esteem
To be a role model
Activity after retirement
Independence
Lifestyle change
Divorce
Widowed

Possible Questions about My Topic:

What is the major motivator for getting and education?
Are women going back just to earn more money?
What is the socioeconomic impact of women going back to school?
Who is likely to return to school?
What is the average age of the nontraditional student?
What are they studying?
Why are women out numbering men in college?
How do they pay for their education?
Are they getting an AA Degree or a Bachelors Degree?
Are they working full time and going to school full time?
Are they successful?
What do women enjoy most about returning?
What are the major obstacles when reentering education?
If married, how does the woman's education affect the relationship?
How does a woman's life change when she returns to school?
Who supports her decision to go to school?
Is she supported?

  1. Hi Shannon!
I think you have chosen a very interesting topic.
This is the question I found most interesting about your topic: What are the major obstacles when reentering education? I think it must be very difficult for women to reenter to education specially for single moms going back to school.

One thing that I will like to know is if today's economy is causing more women going back to school. Maybe they lost their job and they decided to go back to school to better themselves and then find a better job.I wonder if there is a way to find data in order to compare how many women went back to school ten years ago and how many students have reentered education this school year.

  2. Shannon- I am so glad we went to the library. It was a great experience and having friends to bounce ideas off really helps. The support system is such a great tool.

I would be curious to find out what the average GPA is for a re-entering students. I was having a conversation with my sister tonight about class and she said that her peers always looked at us that were re-entering the education field as "oh great, they are going to set the bar! Darn over achievers." Hee Hee..........So true. If the teachers say it will take 2 hours we spend 4-6 hours.

  3. This is a great topic, and so applicable to so many in our class. I am very interested to see what you come up with. My favorite question is:
Why are women out numbering men in college? I question I would like answered would be :What is the average age of women reentering school?

    Good luck!
